by Jamie Carr, president of in:sync (as posted on SR list on 1/8/98). Obviously the world of computers is very fast paced, and new improvements are made to the technology at lightning speed. We are very keen to produce a system which is not only a great editing product but also meets the needs of our present and future users and is stable, consistent and fast. We have made a number of enhancements in Speed Razor 4.0 which we hope that you will come to enjoy over the coming months. In this email, I have tried to set out what you can expect with the new version. Minimum system requirements I would like to encourage you to fill in the survey on our website (under the download area) and let us know your current system setup so that we can best judge what is a reasonable system. As it stands currently we have found that more than 50 % of those of you who have responded, have 128 MB RAM or more and what with the price of RAM falling dramatically we are looking to make 128 MB RAM a minimum requirement. Knowing this, we can do many things to create an efficient caching mechanism. In addition, we have found that Pentium II systems have developed into an extremely fast base for a video editing system and there are many enhancements to be found from their improved memory handling and speed. According to Intel, the Pentium II 266 will be the standard home machine by the summer of next year and knowing that our clients are ahead of the crowd we believe that it would not be out of the question to expect a single Pentium II 233 as a recommended minimum base. Having said all of this, we have been testing with better and lesser machines and we have found that 4.0 still has incredible performance improvements even for those with Pentium 133s (provided you have 128 MB RAM). Recommended system requirements We now take full advantage of multithreading and multiprocessing. This has brought about an extremely significant improvement in previewing (including the ability to scrub through complex unrendered multi-layer composites) and rendering. If you have a dual processor machine we will certainly take advantage of the horsepower it provides maximizing both CPUs to 100% when intensive rendering is called for. We have also added MMX support into a number of our operations which further increases our speed. Through the efficient use of multithreading you will find the UI very fluid and responsive even with projects with thousands of clips thus making long form projects easier to manage and edit. A4V We will be supporting the timecode out feature of the A4V in 4.0 as part of our base functionality (it's built right into our Perception support.) Antex Studio card We will be supporting the timecode out feature of this board as well as some of the other advanced functions of this board-set. Alpha processor support We will continue to support the Alpha processor version of our software for those hardware devices that have Alpha processor support. Targa 1k / 2k / PRO support We have significantly improved the performance of Speed Razor with the Targa board-sets. There are very dramatic improvements with the speed of editing and rendering, and we have optimized the code so that it works equally well with the Targa 1k as it does with the highest end Targa 2k PRO. Razor Blades Instead of having our plug-ins be a separate product we
have decided to include them as part of the standard 4.0 package. These
additional plug-ins provide the ability to perform a variety of effects
including: Inscriber We are including a special version of Inscriber CG which includes the ability to do text with soft shadows and a variety of titling types. New features We have drawn from the huge number of responses for new features from you, our clients. We have tried to incorporate as many as we can (whilst still maintaining stability) and we are always keen to hear future requests on how we can improve our software further. Technical support We have been increasing the size of our technical support staff in order to cope with the additional questions we expect from our new version and in addition we have been working on a number of improvements with our backend support systems so that we can efficiently get the latest news and information to you as quickly as possible. We are very proud of our new (virtual) online assistant. Need a question answered at 3 am ? - no problem - we are maintaining a complete set of up to date questions and answers to try and help you out - watch this space for more details. Training A number of our resellers will be offering training for our new 4.0 version. We will be posting details here and on our web site so keep your eyes peeled if you would like more details. Cost and availability The upgrade is $600 SRP. We are in our final testing phase at this point and pending the all clear from our beta testers 4.0 should be available from your Speed Razor reseller shortly. Thank you all for being so patient with us while we have been working on this new version. I am absolutely positive that you will really enjoy it. Jamie Carr
